The concept

The heroine of NightWire deals in memories: she carries other people’s recollections for a price. One job goes wrong. During a dive into a stranger’s memory she experiences his most intimate night firsthand, and then discovers he knows a name she has never told a soul. That is the whole official pitch, and it is closer to a sci-fi thriller than to anything else on Candy.

Why it stands out

Almost the entire catalogue is built on family ties, workplaces and neighbors. NightWire is one of just eight series tagged Fantasy, and even within that group it is unusual: no dragons, vampires or queens, just a near-future idea about trading memories. The name the stranger should not know is a genuine mystery hook, the kind that could pull you through five episodes on curiosity alone. It also flips the usual dynamic, since the heroine is the professional in control until the stranger proves he is not a stranger at all.

The premise also has a built-in reason for intimacy without a contrived setup. Living someone else’s memory is the whole job, so the romance comes out of the concept rather than being bolted on.

The risks

High-concept stories need room, and five episodes is not much of it. The synopsis promises a mystery but gives no sign of how it resolves, so there is a real chance the answer feels rushed. And if you come to Candy for familiar taboo scenarios, this may simply not be what you are after. We have not rated it on our explicitness scale yet.

Price and free episodes

Episodes 1 and 2 cost nothing and should establish the world and the job that goes wrong. The rest, three episodes at 12 tokens each, adds up to 36 tokens: about $1.44 on the yearly plan, $3.24 on the quarterly one and $5.04 on the monthly one.

Other Fantasy picks

The Fantasy shelf is small and highly rated. She’s not real is another concept-driven story rated 5 out of 5. Dragon Queen’s Dark Desire and Vampire’s Lust go the classic fantasy route and are also rated 5 out of 5. All three cost the same 36 tokens.

Right for you?

  • Yes if you want a story first, with a mystery and a science-fiction twist.
  • No if you prefer the everyday taboo setups that make up most of the catalogue, or want a proven explicitness level.

The verdict

NightWire has the most original premise we have seen in the catalogue, and a hook strong enough to justify the free episodes on its own. Whether five short parts can do the idea justice is uncertain, but for 36 tokens it is worth finding out.

Its only Candy tag is Fantasy, but the memory-smuggling premise reads more like science fiction than the dragons and vampires elsewhere on that shelf. It is one of the most unusual concepts in the catalogue.
