What the synopsis promises
An aging king marries a woman who is the same age as his son. On the night of the wedding she skips the royal bedchamber and turns up in the prince’s room. As he loosens her gown, he spots a mark seared into her shoulder: the sign of the kingdom’s enemy. His father’s new wife is a spy.
That is a lot of setup for a five-episode series, and most of it is good setup. There is a forbidden attraction, a father who is also a king, and a reveal that changes what the attraction means. The prince is left with a question the whole series can hang on: does he expose her, protect her or use her?
Why it stands out
- A twist on day one. Most Candy five-parters are built around a single temptation. Here the temptation comes with a secret attached, which gives the story somewhere to go after the first encounter.
- A different setting. Courts, crowns and enemy kingdoms are a change from the suburban houses, offices and holiday rentals that fill most of the catalogue.
- Stakes beyond the bedroom. A spy in the palace means betrayal can cost more than a marriage, at least on paper.
The honest caveat is length. Five episodes is not much room for palace intrigue, so expect the espionage angle to be a flavor rather than a full political thriller.

My Father’s New Queen has one of the more inventive premises among Candy’s recent releases: a forbidden pairing plus a spy reveal, in a setting the catalogue rarely visits. Whether five episodes can do justice to the intrigue is the open question, but the two free episodes let you find out before spending a token, and 36 tokens is the standard price if you are hooked.
